I am proud of my soon-to-be Fatherhood.

I do not take it lightly and have in fact studied baby-stuff for many years, albeit unknowingly. For example, I know (FOR SURE) that an umbilical cord can be cleanly cut with a Magnum .357 in the heat of battle from several yards away. I also know that an infant can be safely/easily dropped from heights of at least seven or more stories into the arms of robotic enforcement officers. I have also learned that if the grandparents have African masks everywhere and creepy music suddenly plays at every mention of my baby's name, my kid is likely the Anti-Christ, and I will die a fiery death in some coincidentally filmed location only seconds away from rescue.

That, of course, is stuff every new dad likely knows from the get-go. The point here is to share NEW info. So here we go. We all love our little baby, but HOW we love that little guy is a mystery I hope to (partially) solve here:

After shopping around for an acoustic guitar, I started looking at hollow and semi-hollow body electrics and settled (happily) on this Ibanez. It is a full hollowbody and thus plays well unplugged, but also has a very vibrant sound when run through an amplifier. It is slightly smaller than the classic hollowbody Jazz guitars and has a slightly narrower neck, which when combined make this a very comfortable and playable guitar.

Edie and I had the pleasure of attending the BPI "40 Who've Made a Difference" Awards where her father, Leonard S. Rubinowitz, was being honored for his notable service in the public interest. The Awards coincide with the 40th anniversary of Business and Professional People for the Public Interest (BPI) , a Chicago-based public interest law and policy center and are intended to "honor 40 of the Chicago region's public interest heroes by shining a light on these exceptional individuals whose efforts have made a significant difference".

The evening consisted of a well-attended reception and awards dinner in the Imperial Ballroom of the Fairmont Chicago. The key note speaker for the event was Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, a Chicago native. During the awards, a brief description of each recipient's accomplishments was read. The following is what was given to describe Len's work:

Len Rubinowitz is a champion of public interest law. For decades he has applied his legal acumen to the quest for fair public housing policy. Throughout his career, he has actively encouraged his Northwestern Law School students to engage in public interest work, creating courses and programs that are helping to launch the next generation of public interest lawyers.

"Every student who attends Northwestern with the objective of pursuing a public interest career seeks Len's advice... The impact of Len's role as a leader of our Law School's human rights community cannot be overestimated."

Professor, scholar and lawyer, Len Rubinowitz has fought for human rights his entire career. Much of his legal activism and research have focused on housing justice. He helped select the Gautreaux receiver and served as mediator for the Cabrini-Green redevelopment. His books include Low-Income Housing: Suburban Strategies and with co-author Jim Rosenbaum, Crossing the Class and Color Lines: From Public Housing to White Suburbia, which documented and evaluated the impact of the Gautreaux program. Before joining the faculty at Northwestern, Mr. Rubinowitz served as legal advisor and special assistant at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Beyond housing, he has published widely on issues of equity with respect to race and class.

As a professor, Len has been committed to supporting students interested in public interest law by creating and supporting specialized programs and courses at Northwestern. Beyond the influence of his own work, he impacts countless people throughout Chicago through each of his current and former students.

Professor of Law, Northwestern University.

Legal activism and scholarship on public housing issues, including co-authoring Crossing the Class and Color Lines: from Public Housing to White Suburbia with James Rosenbaum.

Began legal career at HUD.

Honored with virtually every teaching award at Northwestern Law School, some numerous times.

Northwestern's Student Funded {Public Interest Fellowship Program (SFPIF) renamed its grant program "Len Rubinowitz Public Service Fellowships" in his honor.

The entire evening was very well done and enjoyable. It was great to participate in recognizing Edie's dad for his years of work in this area. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people and saw several (no less interesting) people I knew. The "celebrity moment" of the evening came when I ran into Illinois Senator Roland Burris and shook his hand.

Sincere congratulations to Len for his outstanding work!

1988 Gibson Epiphone Nouveau Spotlight CMT (Curly Maple Top)

This is a guitar I've owned for over 20 years. I purchased it in Grand Rapids, Michigan sometime in 1988. There's very little information available for this particular model online and virtually no markings or serial info on the guitar itself. So I decided to post whatever info I've been able to piece together in case you own a similar guitar and are looking for some background.

description

The guitar has a solid ("neck through") body made of all mahogany, with a thick curly maple top which is carved and quilted and covered in a heavy polish. The fret board is double octave (24 frets) and uses "ebonol" in place of ebony. It has nine pearl diamond inlaid fret markers and pearl engravings of the Gibson and Epiphone brand names on the headstock. The two pickups are EMG Select, controlled by a push-pull coil tap pot and single volume and tone knobs. The guitar also comes outfitted with a traditional style vibrato/tremolo.

The model I have is the CMT (curly maple top), but I have also seen one in bright red and have heard of one in white finish.

history

In 1957 Gibson bought their fierce rival Epiphone and has since then used Epiphone as its budget brand. By 1971 Gibson-Epiphone guitars were constructed outside the U.S and became an imported line. Gibson would however periodically revive the American manufacture of Epiphone guitars, including some of the last guitars made in Kalamazoo before the final move to Nashville.

Sometime around Norlin's 1987 sale of Gibson to its current owners, the decision was made to produce the Nouveau series. The Gibson Nouveaus were going to consist of cost-effective necks and bodies made in Japan and assembled and finished in Nashville. This would keep them "American made." Although the original sales literature introduces these as purely Gibson guitars, somewhere between the manufacture and finishing, they became the Epiphone Spotlight series. One possible reason for this change may have been Gibson's unease with the questionable marketing claim that these were indeed "American" made. Ironically, the change resulted in a new and rare "American-made" Epiphone.

The first Nouveau guitars introduced by Gibson were a line of flat top semi-hollow guitars under the "Nouveau by Gibson" brand in 1986. In 1987 electric guitars joined the line. By September 1987 Gibson moved the flat top Nouveaus to the Epiphone line, under the brand "Nouveau by Epiphone". The electrics were moved to Epiphone by February 1988. By early 1989 the entire Nouveau line was discontinued due to what appears to be legal issues stemming from the obvious similarities between Gibson's Nouveaus and models made by the then up and coming Maryland guitar maker Paul Reed Smith (PRS).

verdict

Thus production of the electric Gibson-Epiphone Nouveau Spotlight virtually started and stopped within the single year of 1988. I have yet to find information on how many in all were produced but the number cannot be that large. (Rarer still would be the purely Gibson Noveaus made prior to the September 1987 shift to Epiphone. There seems to be some debate among those more knowledgeable as to whether these actually exist other than a couple prototypes.)

As far as the quality and playability of the guitar I can say I originally bought this and have kept it for twenty years because I was (and remain) impressed with its sound and feel. The solid mahogany construction gives it a very distinct and weighty presence, and the action is amazingly tight and rattle free. From what I've seen elsewhere online, owners' and critics' reviews generally range from laudatory to very happy.

If you happen to have any further info or insight you'd be willing to share, feel free to add your comments below.

Greetings!

First off, thank you for visiting this info page. It pertains to a very wonderful and exciting event -- my betrothal to the beautiful and intelligent Edie Rubinowitz. We've created this page as a running list of posts offering as much information as we could muster on various details of our wedding ceremony, reception and related events. If you have any questions that are not answered, please feel free to contact Edie or I directly via E-mail. And feel free to leave a comment below!

Whether from far away or nearby, in spirit or in person, we thank you for celebrating with us!

The first was purely exploratory for us and we stayed in the Britannia Bed and Breakfast in the town of Algoma. For our second trip we decided to take a couple extra days and seek a more private, lakefront setting, which we found in the "Whispering Pines" cottage at Sister Bay.

The cottage was just beautiful and as quaint and comfortable as we could have hoped. We had a wonderfully quiet few days there listening to the waves hit the shore just a few feet away and warming ourselves by the fireplace.

We happened to be there during a huge annual festival which seemed to involve only battered fish and beer. Rather than join in, we found a wonderfully stocked specialty store, Top Shelf Cafe & Gourmet‎, which wined and dined us throughout our visit.

On each trip up to Wisconsin, we also have the pleasure of visiting Aunt Toots and Fred, who always graciously open their warm home to us. Its a great place relax, catch up on Rubinowitz family history, and hear a deep analysis on the current season's Packers line-up.

Well, this was undoubtedly the least enjoyable day of the trip with nothing to look forward to other than a full day of driving, headed into increasingly heavy traffic. We spent a total of 13 hours driving, covering a distance of 832 miles. Alot of that was spent navigating the roads and horrifically bad drivers of the state of Missouri. I've heard that Missouri is the "Show Me" state, but I confess I was yelling "Blow Me!" at the many aloof and unaware drivers I had to deal with. There must be something in the water there which numbs the mind.

Anyway, we gradually made our way up toward Chicago and soon saw the Sears Tower jutting up in the distance. Home at last!

This turned out to be a wonderful trip. Edie was an excellent co-pilot and a comfortable fellow traveler to be with. What a great trip!

Well, its Day Nine of our trip and time to starting heading back on the two-day drive to Chicago. Rather than return the same way we arrived, we took the "southern route", comprised mostly of Interstate 40 due East through New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma. But first we stopped by Santa Fe, New Mexico and visited several of the Art Galleries on Canyon Road. My favorite was Gallerie Corazon where we coincidentally found paintings by Tracy Turner Sheppard whose art I really connect with. Her paintings, of course, were all too pricey, but my Sweetie Pie Edie bought me a wonderful calendar displaying prints of her work. (Thanks Edie!).

Once out of Santa Fe, we had a pretty full day of driving ahead of us, taking us as far as we could before it got too late. When all was said and done, we had driven over 9 hours and covered 610 miles. We stopped for the night just West of Oklahoma City, in a town called El Reno. The accommodations at the Days Inn were modest but comfortable. We scooped up the free fruit at the reception area, headed back to our room and watched "300" on HBO. I think we both slept very well that night.

Being the open-minded and amiable boyfriend that I am, I asked Edie what she's like to do while in Taos. I admit I was a bit surprised/intimidated when she came up with things like Helicopter Rides and White Water Rafting! But out of my great love for her (apparently a love which knows no bounds of self preservation) I swallowed my anxiety and made reservations for us with the Los Rios River Runners.

Los Rios offered a variety of rafting options ranging from the placidly tame to the outright DareDevil. I thought it best to opt for the middle path and chose "The Race Course" which on most days is a Class Three (moderate waves to exciting boulder-strewn whitewater). Little did I realize that due to the earlier weather (which we experienced in Colorado) and subsequent run-off our little rafting excursion would be on Class Four waters.

ANYWAY, after driving to the pick-up point, we piled on the bus with the other eager rafters and headed south to our departure point. The group divided into teams of six, each of which would board a raft alongside a raft leader. I admit I was feeling pumped up and excited, so when it came time to volunteer to take the point position at the head of the raft I foolishly raised my hand.

After several ominous warnings about falling out of the boat we set out, practicing our rowing directions at the command of the leader. Things started off very smoothly and I was thinking to myself "wow, this isn't hard at all". And then the leader told us we were about to enter the "race course" (which apparently I agreed and paid to ride). They weren't exaggerating on the part about the "white" water. It was fast, furious and VERY cold. As our veteran rafter barked out commands we paddled hard right, then left, then backwards, then left again, all in the hopes of avoiding the major boulders and watery plummets ahead. We indeed missed a few, but hit plenty of others.

On one particularly steep drop, yours truly found himself staring the raging river in the face and as the raft popped back up out of the foaming divot, so did its plump point man -- up and OUT of the raft!! Finding myself suddenly alone in the frigid, violent waters, I was surprised at how calm I was. I wondered how man other great men have perished by similarly falling out of a rubber raft. At the time, I couldn't think of any. Thanks to a burly, young police officer who happened to be honeymooning in our raft, I was safely pulled back in to all our wide-eyed astonishment. It was then that I opted to let a much younger lad take the point for the remainder of the course.

After our adventure was over, the veteran rafters all patted me on the back and congratulated me for being a new member of the elite Rio Grande Swimming Team.
